What Does HFA Approved Mean?
HFA approved means a product has been certified by the Halal Food Authority, a UK halal certification body, as meeting its halal standard. For meat and poultry, that means hand slaughter by a Muslim who recites Bismillahi Allahu Akbar on each animal or bird, no mechanical slaughter, and no stunning that kills the animal before it is slaughtered.
What is the Halal Food Authority?
The Halal Food Authority (HFA) has provided halal certification and auditing in the UK since 1994, for both food and non-food producers. As well as meat and poultry, it certifies products such as ingredients, food and drink, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and packaging. HFA is a non-profit body governed by voluntary trustees, and its surplus goes to the Halal Food Foundation, its charitable arm and a registered UK charity.
Its team includes food technologists, auditors, Islamic scholars, inspectors and slaughtermen. HFA describes its work as verifying compliance, auditing products, reviewing documentation and monitoring processes, so that the businesses it certifies keep meeting its standard after the certificate is issued.
What does HFA check before it approves meat?
HFA publishes a clear set of rules for meat and poultry. In short:
- Slaughter by hand. All slaughter is carried out manually by Muslim slaughtermen.
- The name of Allah on each animal. The slaughterman recites Bismillahi Allahu Akbar on each and every animal or bird. HFA does not accept a recording played in the background.
- No mechanical slaughter. HFA does not accept fixed blade or automated slaughter.
- No stunning to kill. The animal or bird must not die before it is slaughtered. Captive bolt and percussion stunning are prohibited.
Beyond the abattoir, HFA's certification covers process monitoring, ingredient checks and halal labelling, so the approval follows the product rather than a single moment on the slaughter line.
Does HFA approved mean the meat was stunned?
It can do. HFA allows stunning, but only under strict conditions. Its long-standing position is "no stunning to kill". It permits a controlled electric stun of very low amperage, with an official veterinary surgeon validating that the animal or bird does not die before slaughter. HFA approves two types:
- Water-bath stun for poultry.
- Electric tong stun for sheep.
Captive bolt and percussion stunning are not allowed under HFA approval. This is the main point where UK certifiers differ. The Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC), for example, does not accept stunning of any kind. Which position you follow is a personal choice, and our guide to HMC vs HFA sets the two side by side. If you want to know more about the non-stun approach, see what HMC halal means.
How is HFA approved different from a shop's own halal sign?
The difference is independent checking. HFA puts it simply: certified products are validated by an independent organisation, with third-party verification and regular audits, while self-certified products lack that validation and traceability. A halal sign with no certifying body behind it is the seller's own claim. An HFA approval means someone other than the seller has audited the product against a published standard.
How can you check a product is HFA approved?
Start with the product itself. Certification belongs to a product and its supply chain, so the certifying body should be named on the product or its listing. HFA also sets rules for how its logo may be used on certified products, and it publishes a list of the companies it certifies on the HFA website. If a seller says a product is HFA approved but cannot show where that comes from, ask.
How Jeff's shows certification
At Jeff's, certification is shown per product. Each product page carries a certification badge that names the body that certified it, so check the badge on the product you are buying before you add it to your basket. The certification belongs to each product and is issued by an independent third party, not by us.
If you are looking for meat that has never been stunned, look for products marked HMC on their product page. You will find them across our fresh meats, steaks and ready to cook ranges.
Frequently asked questions
Is HFA approved meat halal?
HFA certifies it as halal to the HFA standard: hand slaughter by a Muslim, Bismillahi Allahu Akbar recited on each animal, no mechanical slaughter and no stunning that kills. Certifiers differ on whether any stun is acceptable, so which body you trust is a personal choice.
Does HFA allow machine slaughtered chicken?
No. HFA does not accept mechanical or fixed blade slaughter. All slaughter under HFA approval is done by hand by Muslim slaughtermen, who recite the name of Allah on each bird.
Is HFA approved chicken stunned?
It may be. HFA permits a water-bath electric stun for poultry, provided an official veterinary surgeon validates that the birds do not die before slaughter. If you want chicken that has never been stunned, look for a product certified by a body that does not accept stunning, such as HMC.
Is Jeff's HFA approved?
Certification is shown per product: the badge on each product page names the body that certified that product.
